What’s Chocolate Avocado Smoothie?
Chocolate Avocado Smoothie is a simple avocado protein shake with a rich chocolate taste. It’s a healthy breakfast drink that can be enjoyed as a post-workout snack.
Ingredients and Substitutions
This chocolate and avocado smoothie is a thick, dairy-free chocolate smoothie, similar to a milkshake in texture, made with simple natural ingredients.
The key to making the best creamy vegan chocolate avocado smoothie is a ripe avocado with no black spot on its flesh. In fact, black or dark areas in avocado make smoothies bitter, so it is better to avoid them.
All the ingredients you need to make a healthy vegan smoothie using avocado are:
- Ripe Avocado – soft, green, and no black or dark spot on the flesh to avoid a bitter aftertaste. Avocado gives the best creamy texture to this chocolate banana smoothie and healthy fats!
- Unsweetened Almond Milk – or any non-dairy milk you love like soy milk, coconut milk, or oat milk.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder or raw cacao powder for a stronger chocolate flavor.
- Ice Cubes – To add frothiness.
- Vanilla Extract – for taste.
- Soft Pitted Medjool Dates – Medjool dates are way bigger and sweeter than any other variety of dates. So if you want to swap Medjool for another variety, you may need 1 or 2 more dates to get the perfect sweetness.
- Banana – a small banana, you can use a frozen banana too but decrease the ice cubes to 1/2 cup or the smoothie will be too thick. For a stronger banana flavor, use a large banana. It is also absolutely delicious.

Chocolate Avocado Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup Almond Milk
- ½ large Avocado - ripe, with no black spots
- 4-6 Soft Pitted Dates - or 2 tablespoons of maple syrup or coconut sugar
- 2 ½ tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1 cup Ice Cubes
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1 small Banana - sliced
Add-on ideas to boost your smoothie!
- 1 tablespoon Peanut Butter (Unsalted)
- 1 scoop Vegan Protein powder
Instructions
- Before you start, make sure your avocado has no black spot. If so, it means it is too ripe and it will add a bitter taste to your smoothie. You need a ripe avocado with smooth green flesh.
- In a blender, add all the ingredients together, starting with 4 dates. Adjust the amount in the next step if not sweet enough.
- Blend at high speed until frothy and thick. Taste and adjust the number of dates, adding up to 2 Medjool dates to boost the sweetness.
- Serve immediately with unsweetened coconut whipped cream, chocolate chips, or melted chocolate.
I recently had all of my wisdom teeth taken out. So, I’ve been looking up different healthy smoothie recipes. I had this choclate craving and this smoothie hits the spot! I added in peanut butter & reg protein powder. The 2 tbsp’s of maple syrup made it sweet enough for me. And I preferred to not add in ice since it tends to water down the smoothie. So, I froze my banana and it came out creamy and thick. I also, used a little less than 1/2 cup of milk. I think 1 cup without the ice might be a bit much since you’re using a frozen small banana. Its always good to eye it out & start with a smaller measurement and add in more as needed so it doesn’t come out soupy. This smoothie was filling and tasty.
Thank you for the recipe!
This is awesome! I added one tbsp of Peanut Butter and one daughter liked it. Other didn’t care for it in there but she still liked the smoothie. Husband said it reminds him of pudding. We added boba pearls to it just cause… why not! Thanks for the recipe
It was almost desert! Soooooo goooood! Thanks for wonderful and delicious recipe!
Absolutely delicious, I added a scoop of protein powder as my diet is plant based whole food. I added a few more dates to mine and used oat milk. It was so filling. I finished it in two goes. I’m going to make my go to recipe when I’m not feeling so well as I always crave chocolate and sugar when I’m ill. It’s a perfect treat as well.
